Today’s convenience-rich world represents a constant torrent of toxic substances damaging to our health. The problem has reached unprecedented proportions, given the extent of mechanized manufacturing processes and the quantity of artificial, synthetic, and genetically-modified substances in use in products of all kinds, including foods and nutritional supplements.
Toxins are “put’ into the body by several means. We ingest toxins contained in the foods we eat. Toxins are present in foods as pesticides and artificial fertilizers used in growing vegetables, fruits and grains, food additives, colorings, preservatives, and substitutes for natural ingredients (e.g. fat-free, carb-free). Medications and prescriptions drugs are also a significant form of toxins.
We absorb toxins through the skin. Soaps, gels, shampoos, lotions, creams, and perfumes also include toxins. Read the ingredient labels of the products you use. If you can not pronounce the name of the ingredient, chances are the ingredient is artificially made and toxic to the body.
We inhale toxins present in the air we breathe (air pollution), the scents artificially made for perfumes, air fragrances, aerosols, sprays, cleaners, detergents, on so on.
The sources of toxicity, however, are not only external to our body. The body produces toxins internally in the form of metabolic waste (you may have heard of free radicals) through the regular functions of cells making up the different tissues of our body (muscles, organs, tendons, bones, blood). Such toxins need to be eliminated because their accumulation would eventually cause irritation, inflammation of the cells and tissues, while adversely affecting their function. When our elimination organs (lungs, skin, liver, kidneys) can no longer handle the combination of toxins produced by the body, ingested, inhaled and absorbed it will deposit the poisons in tissues (bones, muscles, organs). Any accumulation of toxins is considered significant in terms of its adverse effects on the body. The greater the amount of accumulation, the greater the effect in impeding the normal functions on cells and organs and forming the basis for health-related ailments.
Any negative psychic or spiritual influence, negative or destructive thoughts and emotional patterns will also produce toxic effects in the body, by affecting its chemistry and how the body handles even the harmless substances.
When a toxin has an adverse and possibly life threatening effect on our body it is called a poison. Many substances we use on a daily basis, like medical drugs, refined sugar, refined salt, and food additives are indeed poisons. The difference between the common notion of a poison and the poison represented by toxins is that toxins do not kill you outright. They lead to a gradual, slow process of decay that over a period time, after surfacing as a symptom of an illness (which in actuality is a body’s signal for help), influences the quality of an individual’s life, eventually leading to a compromise in the “healthiness” of an individual. The end result is a shortened life span: from poison to disease to medications to suppress the disease (symptom) to a compromise in a healthy lifestyle to premature aging and invalidity. We have become accustomed to accepting the relative lack of health with old age, but in fact we have become deceived in accepting that old age lacks health.
To belittle the effects of the apparently not-so-harmless substances (refined, processed foods, sugars, medications), or misunderstanding their true effects, is a grave mistake in planning for a healthy future. Our physical body turns into a toxic state when it takes in more than it needs and eliminates. Diseases directly related to toxicity include cancer, allergies, cardiovascular, weak immune system, obesity, fatigue, arthritis and others. All are the result of clogging of body tissues and tubes and suffocating our cells from oxygen and nutrition.
Often the introduction of toxins into our bodies is beyond our will and control. Through conscious efforts we can try to avoid certain foods, beverages, and drugs, and we can avoid pesticides, fungicide and chemical fertilizers in crops by turning to organically grown produce. However, we can not choose the air we breathe, the water we drink or substances we come into physical contact with. We are all exposed to toxins daily. Even foods considered healthy and natural substances may create toxicity when used incorrectly or when ingested in too large quantities. Olive oil, for example, which is a highly nutritious fat when consumed in its raw state, turns into a toxic trans-fat when heated, as in regular cooking, frying, stir-frying, sautéing, and baking.
Healthy dietary habits are essential in sustaining the proper function of every element of our body and supporting the body in eliminating toxins. Key aspects of a healthy diet include the reduction or elimination of refined and processed foods; the consumption of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables; the reduction or total elimination of animal fats and proteins; the daily inclusion of adequate amounts of fresh water. Raw, uncooked fruits, vegetables and sprouted grains and nuts should be a part of everyone’s daily diet for a healthy life.
A healthy body, with well functioning organs and a resilient immune system is capable of handling a certain amount of toxicity. Actually our bodies are in a constant state of detoxification. The body naturally fights to eliminate toxins. It does so by continuously cleansing the blood through the lymphatic system, liver, kidneys, the skin, and digestive system. However, the body can become overloaded with the daily toxic intake, causing an accumulation of the damaging substances within the body. Disease and health aliments can be prevented and treated by supporting the periodic internal cleansing of the body, through a detoxification program. Lessening the workload of our organs through detoxification programs and nutrition in accordance with the fundamental laws of nature will ensure a longer, healthier life.
The answer to the question as to who should undergo detoxification is that everyone must undergo a periodic detoxification program in order to relieve our organs from an overburdened workload condition in reducing toxicity levels in the body.
