A basic item in folk medicine in Asia, turmeric or “luyang dilaw” is used internally and externally for its astringent and cleansing properties. The vivid color of the rhizome gives traditional body polishes their signature golden hue, while turmeric decoctions are taken for fevers, dysentery, and abdominal pain, amongst other ailments.
